The Readers Take Their Turn – Yankees Fans Comment on Jeter-Rodriguez
by Asher B. Chancey, BaseballEvolution.com August 10, 2007
We here at BaseballEvolution.com have been quite regularly praising Alex Rodriguez, the Yankees’ third baseman, while disparaging Derek Jeter, the Yankees’ shortstop. I mean, I know that for most part the BaseballEvolution.com crew feels that A-Rod is one of the greatest players of all time, while we also feel that Jeter has been a very good offensive shortstop but a very bad defensive one. I just didn’t realize how much we harp on it.
Apparently, our comments have struck a collective nerve amongst Yankees fans, and this summer we have received a remarkable amount of email on the subject. What follows is a representative sample of that email. Enjoy!

Dear BaseballEvolution.com,
With the monster year Alex Rodriguez is having, it has been easy to overlook the accomplishments of Derek Jeter, but I wish you wouldn’t. Admittedly, Jeter isn’t the best shortstop ever, but he has held his own admirably after a rough start to the season, and his defense is a big reason for the resurgence of the Yankees pitching. Plus, he is a great hitter.
We all love A-Rod, but don’t forget to give love to D.J. as well.
Love the site,
Terry from Port Jefferson, NY.

BaseballEvolution.com,
I am not sure why you guys constantly dog Derek Jeter. Sure, he is no A-Rod, but no one ever said he was. And it not you can’t be great just because you aren’t A-Rod. For the record, Jeter is hitting .326 this season, which is awesome for a shortstop, and he is on pace to score over 100 runs again this season. And, as the Yankees storm back in the AL East and make a run at the division title, Jeter’s leadership has been key.
You can see how he is able to encourage his teammates from the shortstop position – everytime there is a conference at the mound, he is there encoraging the pitcher and coaching his teammates, even A-Rod. Jeter is All American.
So, next time you want to praise A-Rod, please mention Jeter as well! Tahnks

Dear Asher,
You’re power rankings of the Yankees are a joke. You have the Detroit Tigers in the top five teams in baseball, but the Yankees are below your gay “Line of Death.” I have to wonder, when the Yankees win the World Series, will you still have them below the Line of death, or will you have admitted how wrong you are by then.
And another thing, while I’m at it – I don’t why you keep dogging Jeter. The guy has won the last three Gold Gloves, he will have 3,000 hits someday, and may even be the all time leader in runs scored before it is all through. If Jeter were as bad as you say, Torre would have moved A-Rod to shortstop, don’t you think? I don’t see A-Rod winning any gold Gloves.
Keep up the “good” work,
Joey in Queens

Dear BaseballRevolution.com,
Seems like all we ever hear about these days is Alex Rodriguez. As far as I can tell, all he is good for is cheating on his wife and cursing out the fans. No wonder D.J. isn’t friends with him any more.
Look, I know A-Rod has 38 homeruns this year, and that is great and all. But Jeter is such a better player than A-Rod; D.J. has a higher batting average, more hits, and more doubles than A-Rod. Plus, Jeter plays a tougher position than A-Rod, and he is Gold Glover. You can take A-Rod and his homers, I’ll take Jeter any day.
Peace,
Paul, Latham, Ny.

Dear morons,
Yeah, yeah, yeah!
A-Rod, Arod, A-Rod!
Well, let’s see what happens in October, when Jeter hits .500 and A-Rod can’t get a balls out of the infeild. Then where the Yankees be? Losing because of mister Hero. Again.
A-Rod sucks,

Hey guys,
How can you guys call yourselves baseball fans? You obviously have never played the game, or you’d know that Derek Jeter is ten times more valuable that Alex “Hit My Homeruns and Go Home” Rodriguez. Jeter runs circles around A-Rod in the intangibles – as Peter King said in Sports Illustrated, Jeter is the Joe DimAggio of our era. Jeter, like DiMaggio before him, is now the greatest Living Ballplayer alive.
A-Rod may hit the homeruns, but Jeter is the stirring stick in the glasse. All you have to do is watch the two of them on the field, and their body language tells you everything you need to know. D.J. is the Yankees, A-Rod is just A-Rod.
I really like your site though.

BaseballRetard-lution.com,
F*** the Mets! The Yanks rule New York, and the Yanks will be in the Series while the Mets stay home on their knees sucking the Atlanta Braves tailpipes.
Let give you this like this – Babe Ruth-Lou Gehrig-Joe DiMaggio-Mickey Mantle-Thurmon Munson-Reggie Jackson-Don Mattingly-Derek Jeter. There is an unbroken chain of Yankees greats, and A-Rod is not name on thet list. Just ask true New York fans and they’ll tell you – Jeter is the man, and A-Rod can go back to Houston or Seattle or wherever he came from.

All you liberal bleeding hearts need to suck it up and realize that baseball is life, and sometimes baseball, like life, isn’t fair. It bothers you that we have the best team, every year, and so you cry into your Kerry-Os about how we need to make baseball a communist sport so everyone will get a chance. Well, we live in a capitalist country, and the Yankees are the King, and everyone else is the peasants. And Jeter is the King of Kings, while A-Rod is the rotten second born child who will never live up to that what Jeter is.
A-Rod is having an awesome year, but it doesn’t make him great. Jeter is great, and if you don’t see that, I can’t help you.

Howie in Massapequa

So let me get this straight? Alex Rodriguez cheats on his wife with a stripper and constantly talks shit about the best player in the game today in the media and we are supposed to make him the MVP of the league when he isn't the MVP of the team A-Roid has been nothing but a distraction this season it is only because of Torre and Pasada and Masutui and Derek Jeter that we are even still in this thing I garanttee you if we traded A-Rod at the dedline we’d already be in first place you guys are idiots stop bashing players since you don’t know anything about baseball TORRE FOR PRESIDENT! – Steve

Ashster,
I read your little “A-Rod Jeter” piece from October of last year, and I must say, it made me laugh. No because it was funny, but because of what a smarmy jacka** you are. I guess Jeter proved you wrong didn’t he. If not for A-Rod choking, the Yankees would have won the World Series. What good is 35 homeruns this year after costing your team a World Series title. You and A-Rod should find a nice quiet place so that you can ** *** *** ****** **** **** ***** **** ** **** *** **** * *** ** **** ****** ******* *** *** *** until you have call someone to come let you out!
Have a nice day, nimrod.

Baseballevolution.com,
How can you guys talk endlessly about how irrelevant runs and RBI are and then use those very same statistics to say that A-Rod is better than Jeter? You guys are as big of hypocrites as you idiots. I don’t even know how you guys even got your own website.

Dear Raving Band of Loonies,
Let’s get one things straight – the Yankees win because of Joe Torre and Derek Jeter, the greatest coach and the greatest shortstop of all time. They get lots of help from the greatest catcher since Thurmon Munson, and Hideki Matsui, the greatest player to cross over from a different ethnic league since Jackie Robinson. Soon, they will have one of the greatest first basemen of all time, Jason Giambi, back, and they have the greatest pitching duo of all time – Pettitte and Clemens – back on the mound.
These Yankes are one of the greatest teams of all time, and they have been since way before Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez got there.
Thus endeth the lesson.
Jenny from the block

Dear BaseballEvolution.com:
Here is a poem for you:
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Derek Jeter doesn’t suck as much as you think,
But I know that you do.
That s**t is tight, son! All we need is Kanyay West and J-Z laying down some tracks, and that s**t would be platinum, ya heard!
PEACE,
George in Highland Park

Hey, Stat-head, freak-sheet, SABR-nerds,
Anybody that thinks Jeter sucks and A-Rod rocks must have a monkey brain in his skulls, and parrot d**k in his pants. You guys are such idiots, I am not even going to dignify your site with a response.
Go f**k yourselves.
