Why Barry Why?
by Tony Aubry, Guest Contributor
April 16, 2006

Go back to 1998. With 411 homeruns, 1216 RBI, and a batting average hovering around 300; at the age of 34 Barry Bonds had a career that most ball players would kill for and what millions of kids across the country can only dream of. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough for him.

Now its 2006. With 708 homeruns and 1853 RBI things are only getting worse for Barry. We all know Bonds used illegal drugs and now almost all of America can only take those numbers with a grain of salt. During spring training a book called “The Game of Shadows” was released. It made it hard to believe that Bonds did not use steroids with its very detailed story. However, it looked like the almighty Bonds would just mentally block it out while he hit .700 with three homeruns during the spring. Now, spring training feels like it was ages ago.

A few days ago a story broke alleging Bonds lied to the federal grand jury about his use of steroids back in 2003. This definitely won’t help Bonds’ already terrible season. Let’s face it, if Bonds is convicted of perjury this isn’t going to help his Hall of Fame chances, which were already questionable. As of now, Bonds is hitting a miserable .190 with 1 RBI and NO homeruns. Is this the story that finally gets to Bonds? Or is it his age and the bone chips in his elbow that are causing him to have such a terrible start to what could be his last year to lace up the cleats. Either way, Barry’s wonderful career keeps getting run into the ground which leaves me with one question. Why?
