Mazzonesbane
June 21, 2006
Can you please tell me why Dan Kolb's nick name was Mazzonesbane. I know it's a reference to his time playing for Atlanta and Leo Mazzone but I don't quite make the connection.
Thanks
Bridgett
Keith: Thanks for writing, Bridgett. As you probably know, Leo Mazzone has a well-justified reputation for taking mediocre or struggling pitchers and spinning them into gold. Among many others, he turned Russ Ortiz into a 20-game winner, got John Thompson to post an ERA under 4, and resurrected Mike Hampton from his Colorodo crypt.
Dan Kolb is one pitcher whom he could not improve upon. In fact, Kolb has performed monumentally beter both before his time with Mazzone and since. For whatever reason that the two didn't work well together, he is Mazzone's bane.
