LMB3:
Can you tell me why Joe Morgan always talks down the Oakland A's. He
was saying last night on one of the broadcast, e played for an American Team one
year, but couldn't remember what team it was. (Oakland in 84' or 85' , and the
man lives in Oakland!!!) Also that the Red's weren't known as the Big Red
Machine when they played the Oakland A's.
Keith:
I can't say for sure, of course, but I have two theories.
1) Morgan is interested in propagating the myth that the Cincinnati Reds were
the Team of the 70's. Many people see that the A's won three World Series in the
70's to the Reds two (one of the wins coming against the Reds) and conclude that
the A's were the greater dynasty. This threatens Joe Morgan's feelings of
greatness.
2) Morgan has gone on record as having a completely Antediluvian attitude
towards baseball. He rejects any of the new analysis of baseball that has come
about in the past 20 years or so. Morgan has not read Moneyball, saying
that he did not need to in order to disparage it. He also believes Oakland GM
Billy Beane to be the book's author...
The Athletics' current regime is based on revolutionary attitudes towards
traditional baseball practices, and their success goes against everything Morgan
stands for.
