Milo Hamilton: A Call for the Ages By Pat Hughes
Part of the
Baseball Voices Series,
Written, Narrated, and Produced by Pat Hughes
Total Playing Time: 50:25
OUR PRICE: $14.95
"Holy Toledo!"
Hall of Fame broadcaster Milo Hamilton's career has spanned seven decades, seven major league franchises, and over 9,000 games. He has been the voice of the Houston Astros since 1985, but that likely will not be his lasting legacy.
Milo was privy to perhaps the most anticipated call in sports history when he chronicled Henry Aaron's record-breaking 715th career home run. Two other broadcasters had the play-by-play for that historic event on other outlets, but it is Hamilton's call that is always replayed.
In addition to the audio of that call and Milo's own description of the preparation that went into making such an important call, many other great moments are found on this tribute CD. You'll hear tidbits from the "We Are Family" Pirates team of 1979, the Cubs ending a 39-year postseason drought in 1984, the Astros' World Series team in 2005, Craig Biggio's 3,000th hit, and some of the incredible 11 no-hitters that Hamilton has called.
The man who gave Ryne Sandberg the nickname "Ryno" doesn't like to toot his own horn, but it's clear from listening to this CD that he is indeed among the elite broadcasters of all-time.

Red Barber, Play-By-Play Pioneer By Pat Hughes
Part of the
Baseball Voices Series,
Written, Narrated, and Produced by Pat Hughes
Total Playing Time: 46:00
OUR PRICE: $14.95
"Whoa, Doctor!"
Red Barber and Mel Allen were the first two men to receive the Ford C. Frick Award and be inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame. Barber was a pioneer in many other regards as well, being the first broadcaster to:
-
Call play-by-play on a televised MLB game
- Call play-by-play on a televised NFL game
- Call the majors' first night game
- Call games full-time for the Cincinnati Reds, Brooklyn Dodgers, and New York Yankees
- Coin the phrase, "In the Catbird Seat" on air
All told, Barber called 13 World Series contests and five All-Star games in his 33-year broadcasting career. He chronicled Jackie Robinson's historic major league debut, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris' chase of Babe Ruth, and hired current broadcast legend Vin Scully. Barber's style will be familiar to fans of Scully, and indeed elements of Barber's technique are evident throughout any major league broadcast.
This CD contains clips from as early as 1935. Considering that, they are remarkably high-quality sound. It's a real treat to hear Barber's vivid descriptions of some of baseball's all-time greats. He describes Joe DiMaggio "running like a deer" while legging out a double, Tommy Henrich rounding the bases with a "grin as big as a slice of watermelon" when he broke a 0-0 tie with a homer, and Johnny Mize swinging the bat as though it "weighs no more than a dries turkey feather."
Take a trip back through time with this CD and learn about the genesis of a baseball tradition that we now take for granted: the play-by-play broadcast.
Harry Caray, Voice of the Fans by
Pat Hughes
Part of the
Baseball Voices Series,
Written, Narrated, and Produced by Pat Hughes
Total Playing Time: 66:07
OUR PRICE: $14.95
"There's danger here, Cherie."
You're all familiar with Harry Caray, the legendary broadcast voice of the Cardinals, Athletics, White Sox and Cubs for 53 years. But you're not as familiar with him as is Pat Hughes, the Radio Play-By-Play voice of the Chicago Cubs.
If you haven't heard Pat's work, he provides the perfect balance of crisp narration, witty banter, and shrewd analysis in his broadcasts, and the same quality comes through on these Baseball Voices CDs. Additionally, you'll hear classic clips from throughout Harry's career, part of his Hall of Fame induction speech, and even a conversation between Harry and president Ronald Reagan. If you're as big of a Harry fan as I am, you'll enjoy re-living your memories of him time and time again with this CD.

Jack Buck, Voice of the Cardinals By Pat Hughes
Part of the
Baseball Voices Series,
Written, Narrated, and Produced by Pat Hughes
Total Playing Time: 48:25
OUR PRICE: $14.95
"I don't believe what I just saw!"
Joe Buck has become perhaps the most well-known voice of the current generation of baseball fans. And yet, in many ways, he still broadcasts in the great shadow of his father, Jack Buck.
Buck was the voice of the Cardinals for nearly 50 years, even teaming with Harry Caray for a while. Buck was one of the few radio personalities who wouldn't seem like a second fiddle next to the gregarious Caray.
Additionally, you'll hear classic clips from throughout Jack's career, including milestones reached by Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, and Mark McGwire, and of course, his famous "Go Crazy" call.

Bob Uecker, Mr. Baseball By Pat Hughes
Part of the
Baseball Voices Series,
Written, Narrated, and Produced by Pat Hughes
Total Playing Time: 68:05
OUR PRICE: $14.95
"So I'll root, root, root for the Brewers..."
Bob Uecker is probably best known for his role on
Mr. Belvedere, his hosting of
The Wacky World of Sports, and his catch phrase on
Major League: "Juuuuust a bit outside!" But not only is Mr. Baseball one of the funniest people alive; he is extremely knowledgeable about baseball and one of the best ever at making plays sound exciting.
It should come as no surprise that this is the funniest CD in a series that isn't short on laughs. From the zany story of how Uecker became a catcher to his impromptu Cooperstown speech, this CD will have you rolling for the better part of an hour.
Pat Hughes broadcast with Mr. Baseball for 12 years on Milwaukee Brewers radio, making him more qualified than anyone to produce this tribute. The CD is littered with personal memories from the time the two broadcast greats spent together.

Harry Kalas, Voice of the Phillies By Pat Hughes
Part of the
Baseball Voices Series,
Written, Narrated, and Produced by Pat Hughes
Total Playing Time: 63:20
OUR PRICE: $14.95
"We've got hiiiiigh hopes"
18-time Pennsylvania Sportscaster of the Year Award winner Harry Kalas had a wonderfully smooth voice. The Hall of Fame broadcaster, who worked over 35 years as the voice of the Phillies and over 40 years as a big league broadcaster before his untimely departure in April of 2009, is as beloved by his hometown fans as any other broadcaster around.
Indeed, it was public outcry among Philadelphia fans over Kalas and broadcast partner Richie Ashburn not being allowed to broadcast the 1980 World Series that paved the way for local broadcasters to perform World Series games in 1981.
Harry has been privy to announcing during many historic events of Major League Baseball. Among those featured on the CD are:
-
Mike Schmidt's 500th home run
- Terry Mulholland's no-hitter
- The 23-22 Phillies win over the Cubs
- "The Steve Garvey Game"
- Game #162 of the Phillies' 2007 season
Perhaps more than any other Baseball Voices CD, this one is stocked full of exciting clips and personal anecdotes from the broadcaster himself.
If you haven't heard Pat Hughes' work as the radio Play-by-Play voice of the Chicago Cubs, he provides the perfect balance of crisp narration, witty banter, and shrewd analysis in his broadcasts, and the same quality comes through on these Baseball Voices CDs.
